This is Phnom Penh’s first LGBTI street – created to include diversity and fun in equal measure. The street is only 6 months old from conception and has a fresh buzz about it that feeds off the now famous Valentino’s Club and many different bars, restaurants and cafes all listed here and being run by experienced people who have come together to cater for a variety of tastes. Why have they done this? “Sabay Sabay Street” [Literally Happy Happy Street] is a concept devised by LGBTI professionals who want to show the world how genuinely friendly and open Cambodia is to all nationalities both in and out of the tourist areas. This is a combination that is exclusive to Cambodia in South-East Asia (SEA),” explains Mark Sutton, the manager of Generations and Evolve – the popular mixed bar and male grooming centre.
The concept is certainly working, with the local Khmer and ex-pats visiting the street in mass and tourists beginning to hear about the street and including Phnom Penh on their travel plans. “We really want this to work for all Cambodian People.” says Dwight Hayden, the manager of Tropicana and Gamestation (a Caribbean themed bar and High-tech social lounge). “Cambodia has what it takes to become a major tourist centre in SEA. Our concept is comprehensive, but it works because of the people – the Khmer are just so hospitable. It’s the only country I’ve ever been to where the people are the biggest feature. They are just amazing!”
It’s true. Our team on the Sabay Sabay Street website have come, seen and witnessed it and now we call this home. For us this is a real paradise. For you? Come and see!
